{ About The CHARACTER }
x Irma Millicent Pince"No person can be called friendless who has the companionship of good books."
CANNON OR ORIGINAL: Canon! AGE: 32 DOB: October 11 RACE: White GENDER: Female SEXUALITY: Straight WAND: 11 in, willow BROOM: n/a PET: n/a (Pets might damage her books!)
APPEARANCE: Irma really is quite pretty once you get past the stern looks and the fact she’s usually hiding behind baggy robes and a book. Irma has light brown hair that goes to her shoulders. She has pretty blue eyes that were probably inherited, though she doesn’t know her real parents. She’s about average height, and on the skinny side. She has ivory skin that’s never tanned since she rarely leaves the library except at night, much less the castle.
She usually has a very stern look to her, and if looks could kill there would be many Hogwarts students lying dead in the library. Despite her young appearance, she pulls of the evil librarian look rather well. When she first started the job at age 18 most students thought she’d be easy to run all over with her shy, bookish appearance. However, she soon showed them, and has accomplished a very stern facial expression she’s nearly always wearing. However, if she’s reading a good book, talking about a book, or talking to a student she actually likes you’ll occasionally see her smile or even laugh and then it’s easier to see her pretty unintimidating face. FACE CLAIM: Emily Deschanel []
PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION: Irma Pince is, of course, extremely bookish. She was extremely shy and quiet as a child, and even now doesn’t really socialize with the other teachers. Irma is perfectly happy to sit in her library and read all day. Besides, she has to keep an eye on her books. She doesn’t feel the need to make conversation with other people, and the former Ravenclaw rarely makes real connections with other people. If you get on her good side though, and want to talk to her about a subject she’s interested in, she’s really quite interesting. She doesn’t really talk about anything personal though. She was an excellent student and she always excelled in all her classes that involved any sort of studying. Books are her escape from the real world, and Irma often gets extremely absolved in a book whether it’s fiction, biographies, or just an informative book. Like any good Ravenclaw, Irma likes to know things, and she hates not knowing about something. She’s also a bit obsessive compulsive about how her library is organized. People making a mess in the library or putting a book back in the wrong place annoys her to no end.
Books were her only friend when she was in school and it pains her to see students treat them badly. She knows mistreating books isn’t the worst someone could do, but it’s not going to stop her from hating you and putting you right up there with You-Know-Who. Someone tearing a page out of a book or writing in a book should be a crime in her opinion. If it were up to her, only the best students would be allowed to take them out of her library or even use them in the library. It’s her natural instinct not to trust the students unless they prove themselves worthy, and once you’ve gotten on her bad side there is no turning back. She’s one to stereo type, and your house (and gender for that matter) makes an impact on her opinion of you at first, though you can change that. First impressions mean a lot to her. So if the first time she saw you was when you dropped a heavy novel on the ground she puts you on ‘the list’ as students call it. Rumor has it, if you get on her bad side, your name is put on the list, and every time you’re in the library she’ll then proceed to watch you like a hawk as you wander about the library. The list doesn’t exist in the literal sense of the word, but it’s true to an extent. She’s a true Ravenclaw. She’ll never forget if you mistreated her precious books and she’ll take any reason she can get to kick you out of the library if you are on her bad side. If you think she hates you, she probably does. She holds grudges, and she doesn’t let them go. Ever. She’ll be extremely cold towards you, and give you plenty of glares while you’re in the library. She’s not one to think it’s inappropriate to spy on a student from around the corner to make sure they’re not breaking the rules. While many students describe her as an evil hag, there are still the students who love her. They tend to be the ones that she likes, because she's very helpful and kind towards them and will actually talk to them and let them wander about the library on their own. BOGGART: The library… on fire. PATRONUS: An owl HOPES FOR THE FUTURE: Irma would like nothing more than to stay at Hogwarts and be the librarian until she dies. She would also like to help those truly dedicated students with their desire for knowledge.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: A very good memory, and excellent eye sight. Almost as if she could see through shelves. BLOOD: Unknown BIRTHPLACE: Unknown MY FAMILY: N/A WHATS IN THE PAST: As a baby Irma was left on the steps of a muggle orphanage. She was left only with a note that said “Her name is Irma. She’s one year old and she was born on October 11th. I can’t take care of her anymore.” There was nothing else on the note, and little Irma never even got that scrap of paper to remember her parents by. Nothing was ever heard from them again. Irma began to be placed in various homes, but she’d always get sent back because strange things would happen around here. At the young age of four in her second home she learned to read, and she’s never really stopped. She was in fourteen different homes between age one and age nine. Three days after her ninth birthday Susan and John Pince brought her home for the last time. Irma didn’t expect to stay long. Her time at homes had began to shorten even more. Irma was a strange, quiet girl who only wanted to read and caused strange things to happen. This only got worse as she got older. Susan recognized Irma for what she was almost immediately though. Susan had come from a large pureblood family, but she had been a squib. At age 17 she was disowned, but it was enough for her to recognize a witch when she saw one. Susan and John adopted the nine year old girl and accepted her into their family. Both Susan and John were smart and John’s muggle family had been on the wealthy side of things. They owned a large manor, and much to Irma’s delight a whole library of books.
When she was 11 Irma went to Hogwarts as most magical children in Britain do. The quiet, plain girl was sorted into Ravenclaw. Irma was smart, and when she wasn’t studying she was usually reading. The Ravenclaw found her happy place in the library. Because really, it was the only place she belonged. Even for a Ravenclaw she was quiet and bookish. Irma had been so used to building up her walls so it didn’t hurt so badly when she had to go to a new home, and she had never really let them down accept to let in Susan and John in. They had worked at it for quite some time. Eleven year olds are hardly going to go out of their way to get someone to be their friend for long. So Irma never really had any friends but her books and the old librarian. Three days after she turned 14, the fifth year reunion of the day she was adopted, Irma received a letter from the ministry. Her parents had died in a car accident. All of a sudden Irma was alone again. Irma was stronger now than she had been before though and she managed to make it through their death mostly alone. Her books helped a lot. Dumbledore convinced the ministry it was okay that Irma stay at her parents’ home during the summers so long as a school official checked on her once a week because Irma begged him to. She didn’t want to go through foster care again or live in an orphanage.
Irma was sitting in the library talking to the old librarian one day during the Christmas holidays of her seventh year. The old woman broke the news to Irma that at the end of the year, she was retiring. Irma was sad at first. Who would take care of all these books now? They’d probably hire some old bat who didn’t know what she was doing and the library would go to the dogs. (The dogs being the bad students of course.) Then, being the Ravenclaw she is, she came up with an idea. After allowing herself a night to prepare, she showed up at Professor Dumbledore’s office New Year’s Day with her idea. Irma got in there and she talked more to the headmaster than she had in the past 7 years. Including the time when he was arranging it so she didn’t have to go back into foster care or an orphanage. She gave a huge list of reasons why she would be the ideal candidate for the new librarian despite being so young. After she finished her speech (that was written out as any good Ravenclaw would do) she looked at the Headmaster to see his response. Dumbledore had a twinkle in his eye and told Irma after that lovely speech he could hardly refuse her the job now could he?
So after graduation Irma took over the library. At first students thought Irma would be easy to take advantage of. She was only 18 and she was extremely shy. Irma loved those books more than anything in the world though, and she soon began to be known as extremely strict and protective over the things. Students caught breaking the library rules were chased out of the library, and Madame Pince never forgot, and the student remained in her bad books for the rest of their time at Hogwarts. It was hard to get a forged note to use the restricted section pass her. The books were always on the right shelf, and the library was well taken care of. It certainly seemed that it would have been hard to get a better librarian than her.
CAREER: Hogwarts Librarian since she was 18. EXPERIENCE: She’s had the job since she graduated from Hogwarts. SCHOOLING: Hogwarts, Ravenclaw
{ OTHER INFO }
RP EXAMPLE: Irma Pince sat behind the counter of the library. The library had opened at exactly 7:00 AM as it did everyday less than 30 minutes ago and there weren’t any students their yet so the brunette had a new book opened in front of her and their was a happy, rare, smile that was on her face. It was a brand new book, just in from the publishers, and Madame Pince was reading it before it got put on the shelves, and she needed to finish it by tomorrow morning because there was a Ravenclaw sixth year girl who was also looking forward to reading it. She had already straightened up the library, and put a pair of reading glasses that someone had left behind in the lost and found behind her desk. So she had decided, why not get a head start on the book before the students started arriving? The library was silent for a few more minutes as she turned the pages of her novel. Then she heard the heavy oak doors open and her head popped up to see who was in the library so early. Probably a student here to finish their essay they had put off until the last minute as so many of them did.
Her eyes narrowed when she saw who it was. This student had gotten on her bad side the first time they had entered the library six years ago when they had spilled an entire bottle of ink over one of her favorite history books. (Irma of course knew many spells to clean and repair books, and had cleaned it up in moments, but that was beside the point, it was the principle of the thing.) She glared at him before asking, “Is their anything I can help you with?” When they shook their head nervously and quickly went to the back of the library towards the History of Magic section Irma stuck a bookmark in her book (for she never folded the corners of her books) and walked over to a nearby spot and began to straighten books near where he was searching watching carefully. ANSWER: Remus and Tonks didn’t even get there own death scene! It was just this casual little line mentioned briefly, easy to skip over. OTHER:
