A/N: Hello! Well I was in a fluff story mood a few weeks ago. I began jotting down a few ideas and I'm somehow making them into a story. Its still a work in progress. Enjoy. =]
The sun streamed into the top room of the quaint New Jersey home. The sun made the light look a bit yellow against the soft, grey carpet. The walls were a soft peach color lined with photos in various frames. A few from the beach trip the previous year, a few from several holidays past and her a few of the moments shared with her boyfriend. A collage hung over the closet door, strewn with many colored pins, ribbons, photos and penned notes of friendship.
A young woman sat at her desk, a heavy textbook and spiral notebook in front of her. Her normal curtain of black hair was tied back in a tight braid. She seemed deep in concentration, so the knock on her ajar door sent her pulse racing.
“Phone for you.”
Lisette’s dark eyes looked up to see the sly grin of Penelope Smith. Her large blue eyes seemed amused by the fright still visible in her Spanish friend’s eyes. Lisette frowned, she hated seeing that smirk.
“He says its urgent.” She added quickly. Lisette stood up at once and rushed past Penny to the phone downstairs. ‘Damn phone.’ She thought ‘Why do you have to be down there?’ Her pulse was still racing as she skipped several steps to the landing and turning a corner to the small table where the phone lay. The poor girl was beginning to fear the worst.
“Lan?” She questioned nervously into the mouthpiece.
“I love you.”
The Spaniard blinked and felt her cheeks grow warm. Even from far away he could still make her blush. She was always a silly schoolgirl whenever she heard his voice. “Thank you…” She replied shyly. “I do too.” She heard his chuckle and smiled, momentarily beginning to relax. “What’s so urgent?” She asked, straightening as she remembered.
He laughed out right. “No big deal.” She heard. “Just wanted to tell you that I love you.” It was her turn to laugh. She relaxed and sat on the nearby chair, twirling the spiral cord around her fingers. “You couldn’t wait twenty seconds?” She asked him.
“No.” He told her. His voice sounded somewhat pained. “It was killing me. I waited all day to talk to you.” Lisette’s cheeks darkened. How could he always manage to turn her insides to mush, without even planting a kiss on her?
“Liar,” She accused, trying to hide her embarrassment. The butterflies in her stomach fluttered at his hearty laugh.
“What are you doing tomorrow night?” He questioned her. She blinked, caught off guard by the sudden change in topic. Kim and Penny were planning on renting a few movies for the night and she knew Sabrina would want to go out into the city. She knew Viv would be heading to Pennsylvania for her weekly family weekend. A night with the girls sounded fun, but she’d give it up spend a night with Lan.
“Nothing…yet.” She told him. “What do you have in mind?” She could already imagine their date. A movie, dinner or perhaps a walk by the park. Maybe he wanted to take her dancing.
“Ok. Wear your blue dress tomorrow evening,” He told her. “The one when we first met.” She blinked, confused. She knew the dress, and she knew how much he liked it, but he only asked her to wear it on special occasions.
Before she could ask why, he answered her question. “How does dinner with my family sound?” The news fell down upon her like a ton of bricks.
“Y-Your parents?” She asked meekly.
“My sisters too.” He reminded her.
Lisette began to shake her head no. She couldn’t meet them! Sure, the two had been dating for a few months now, but she wasn’t ready! They lived in Pennsylvania, but unlike Vivian’s family (who lived in Bradford County), by Lancaster County, closer to York County. They would hate her, she was sure of it. She could imagine what they would say after the two left. ‘Too skinny’, ‘too mature’, ‘Still studying, is she?’. She felt herself a bit clammy.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea Lan.” She told him weakly.
“Oh c’mon.” He encouraged. “They don’t bite. I swear. I’m the only one in the family who bites.” She could picture his grin, but she wasn’t grinning back. “You’ll be fine. What’s the worst that can happen?”
“I could trip on the stairs, fall over and die from a broken neck.” Came her quick reply. He laughed once more. “You’re one of the most poised and graceful people I know.” He told her. “Not gonna happen.”
“I could choke on a vegetable during dinner.” She told him, quick with another reply. “15% of people died from choking.” She told him.
“I’ll make sure Mom strays from the veggies.” He told her dryly. She rolled her eyes. “Do you really not want to meet my family?” He sounded hurt. She closed her eyes and shook her head.
“Its not that.” She told him. “I-I’m scared.”
“What of?” He asked gently.
“Your parents.” She paused briefly. “Now, don’t laugh.” She warned.
“I won’t.” He promised.
“Its just…What if they don’t like me? What if I’m not good enough? What if I don’t fit in?”
“You’re stressing over nothing.” He told her. He was using his doctor voice on her right now. His calming voice, but a voice that clearly and gently told her she was wrong.
“They love you already.” He told her. “And they’re dying to meet you. Its just one weekend anyway.” She bit her lip, wondering how she could get out of it already. “If it doesn’t work out, you can tell me I was wrong and you were right.” He was too quick for her. “And I’ll buy breakfast everyday for the next week.”
She sighed. There was no way out of it. And a free bagel and coffee sounded alright to her anyway. “Alright.”
“You won’t regret it.” She could tell he was amused. He’d probably dance victory as soon as he hung up.
“I hope not Lan.” She told him, defeated. “If your family hates me I don’t know what I’ll do.”
“Come crying to me.” He told her confidently, “And I’ll wipe your tears away and kiss you and tell you it’ll all be alright.”
She sighed, knowing exactly how that felt. She longed to be in his arms right now. The two had met six months before and the girl knew she was crazy about him. She loved him truly, madly and deeply. Her days were cloudy when he wasn’t around or he couldn’t call and she always brightened at the sound of his voice.
“I think we reached our limit.” He told her suddenly. She looked to the clock. Twenty minutes had gone by fast. She frowned, aching for more time with him.
“Yeah,” She agreed, “Kim will be here, yelling if I don’t get off in two minutes.” She grimaced at the memory of one night a few months ago. She guessed he did too because he added quickly “I’ll pick you up around two. We’ve got a bit of a drive ahead of us.”
She nodded. “Two is fine.”
“I love you. Sweet dreams.”
“I love you too.” She told him, feeling her stomach knot up once more. “Take care.”
“Bye.”
“See you.”
She heard the click and hung up. She rested her head against the wall. She was going to meet his parents. “Augh” She leaned back and hit her head.
“You ok?”
She turned and saw Kim, her forehead had a white smudge along her hairline. Her clothing was splattered with a few brown spots. She nodded. “You baking?” Lisette asked.
Kim nodded. “Brownies.”
Lisette’s mouth began to water. “With nuts?” She smiled as she saw Kim wrinkle her nose. “I can make a few with nuts,” She relented.
“Let’s make a big batch.” Lisette suggested. “I’m in a chocolate mood.” She stood up and walked over to Kim who led her into the kitchen. She grinned when she saw Sabrina licking her fingers.
About forty-five minutes later the girls had a good sized batch of chocolate brownies. Sabrina had begun dusting powder sugar on a few, and Lisette was nibbling one with nuts. Kim had one of her small baskets and was placing a few inside.
“So you’re going to meet his sisters then?” Sabrina asked Lisette. The girl nodded. “But, haven’t you already met one of them?”
“I’ve met Liesl a few times.” Lisette confirmed. “But he has plenty of others. Leslee is the oldest. She’s married already. Then there’s Laurel, she’s about eleven or twelve and Lucy, who’s five or six.” Lisette remembered each clearly from the pictures she had seen in Lan’s apartment.
“Leslee? Lan? Liesl? Laurel and Lucy?” Penny asked from the doorway. “What were they’re parent’s thinking?”
Lisette shrugged. She had wondered about it often. But Lan seemed to like it and Lisette didn’t mind so much. She thought it kinda cute, actually.
“Lisette will fit right in.” Kim teased. Lisette blushed and stuck out her tongue at her friend.
“What are his parent’s names?” Sabrina asked, “Leonard and Lily?”
Lisette shook her head no. “Meg and Richard.”
“Oh.” Sabrina frowned, then decided it didn’t matter. She shrugged and took a bite from a brownie.
“These are really good.” She told Kim after swallowing.
“Her secret ingredient is human flesh.” Penny joked.
“The nuts are actually scorpions.” Lisette added.
“And the human blood really makes them melt in your mouth.” Kim added.
“Eww that’s sick!” Sabrina accused. She made a face at the plate and took another bite from the one in her hand.
“And she still eats it!” Penny laughed. Kim and Lisette joined, amused by Sabrina’s anticts.
“What can I say?” Sabrina asked, “They’re good!. Human flesh, blood and scorpions make nummy brownies.” Lisette rolled her eyes. Sabrina was the youngest of them, and considered herself the baby. Of course she would find it justified to use words like ‘nummy’.
