So here's the deal. I finally watched O Brother Where Art Thou? the other night. I really enjoyed it, but I also started to want to write things with the Dawkins father in it, since I have George Clooney as his PB. Anyways, this is the result of late night ponderings. Enjoy!
Richard Dawkins lay on the couch in the living room, enjoying some well deserved rest. His wife was out of town and he had been left with their three children. Today his wife would be arriving back, and Richard was resting easy in the knowledge that the house was neat and the kids were all in one piece. As he thought this, Richard let out a contented sigh and put his hands behind his head. Suddenly, he heard noise from the kitchen and he decided to get up and check out the source of the noise.
Opening the door to the kitchen, his eyes met a messy sight. The twins, aged four, were sitting in the middle of the kitchen, both covered in flour. The kitchen itself was a sight to behold, as the counters all had a light dusting of flour and there was a huge puddle of water under the sink. The candy drawer had been opened and Richard was almost sure that there was no candy left. Nine year old Leslee stood by the breakfast table, a horrified look on her face. When she saw her father, the girl’s eyes widened and she immediately defended herself. “I tried to stop them, Daddy! I really did, but there’s two of them!” She cried out helplessly.
Richard gave Leslee a small smile that told her she was in no trouble and then he advanced on the twins. First he leaned down next to Liesl, who was happily pre-occupied with a gooey dough that she had in a bowl. Richard cleared his throat and Liesl looked up as if noticing her father for the first time. Her blue eyes sparkled in recognition and she shook her blonde curls out of her face as she gave Richard a delighted smile. The young girl seemed unaware that she had done anything wrong or was in any danger of being in trouble. “Daddy!” She declared with a little laugh.
Richard had to work hard to keep a grin off of his face at Liesl’s reaction to him. The worst part about Liesl was that it was almost impossible to stay mad at her. It made it rather difficult when she was in trouble. “And what have we got here?” He asked in the best stern voice he could muster.
An impish grin dawned on Liesl’s face and she held the gooey mess up to her father. “We’re making a birfday cake for Mummy!” She declared, giving a satisfactory nod. “It gonna be pwetty!”
Richard grinned at this, figuring he couldn’t very well punish the twins for making a cake for their mother. “Are you now?” He said instead, ruffling Liesl’s curls. Liesl laughed at this and nodded. Richard then turned to the brunette Lan, who was sorting jelly beans, a look of pure concentration on his small face. “And what are you doing, my man?” Richard asked his son, raising an eyebrow.
Looking up from his sorting, Lan gave his father a serious look and pointed emphatically to the jelly beans. “Decoration.” He said, adopting a little smirk as his brown eyes surveyed his work.
“Ah.” Richard smiled and stood up, not at all bothered at his son’s monosyllable sentence. At first it had worried the Dawkins that Lan usually only spoke a few words, but the doctors had told them that there was nothing to worry about. Lan was perfectly capable of talking, but he was a man of few words and saved his energy for other things. Besides, his twin talked enough for the both of them so the doctor guessed Lan didn’t see much sense in talking for himself.
Surveying the kitchen again, Richard scratched his chin and cleared his throat. As cute as the twins’ thoughtfulness was, his wife would be home very soon and this kitchen needed to be cleaned. Pulling out his wand, Richard muttered a few spells and watched in satisfaction as the kitchen literally cleaned itself. He looked at the twins and used a couple of spells on them to get the flour and dough off of them. He then put Liesl’s bowl on the counter and let Lan place his jelly beans where he wanted on the ‘cake’.
When Lan was done the boy gave a satisfactory nod and smiled at Richard. Richard smiled back and then let Liesl survey the concoction. “Lovely!” The little girl stated, giving Richard a big hug and kiss. Leslee entered then and raised an eyebrow at the twins’ cake.
“Well, it’s very good for four year olds.” The older girl said, giving the twins a warm smile. She then retrieved the cake that she and Richard had made and sat it next to the mass of dough and jelly beans. “Mum will be delighted.” She said primly, brushing her own blonde hair out of her blue eyes. It seemed to be a running Dawkins trait for the girls to have blonde hair and blue eyes, and for the boys to have brown hair and brown eyes.
Happily watching his children arrange the cakes, Richard left the kitchen and went into the living room. Now maybe he could get some rest. However, that wish was not granted, as the door suddenly opened and his wife burst into the house.
“I’m home!” She called, throwing her luggage down and brushing her blonde hair out of her face. She ran over to Richard and gave her husband a kiss. “How were the kids?” She asked, playfully ruffling his dark hair, knowing how proud her husband was of his hair.
Before Richard could answer, the twins ran out of the kitchen. “Mummy!” They both yelled and jumped into their mother’s arms. Leslee followed, though with much more restraint and primness. However, the grin on her face showed how happy she was to see her mother.
“Oh, I missed my babies! I tell you I’m going to have to quite being a healer soon, because I can’t stand to be away from my family.” Meg Dawkins exclaimed, hugging her children close and grinning at her husband. “Being home is the best birthday present every. I don’t need anything else.”
Taking this opportunity to tease his wife, Richard smirked and winked at the kids. “Well, that’s good. That means we don’t have to…”
“Richard.” Meg warned and raised an eyebrow.
“Wait long to give you your present!” Richard finished, giving his wife a cheeky grin and kissing her. Meg just rolled her eyes and turned to cuddling Lan and Liesl. “Though I think you’ll want to see your cakes before you do anything else. I think you’ll like them.” Richard added, motioning toward the kitchen.
“Oh yes! Dad and I made a cake for you!” Leslee clapped her hands and beamed at her mother.
“And so did Lanny and I!” Liesl pointed to Lan, who nodded in agreement.
“Well, I’d love to see them.” Meg smiled and planted a kiss on top of Lan’s head. “It’s good to be home.”
Richard nodded and smiled at his family. The nap could definitely wait.
