((So... here's the first two chapters of my story. It only has a few of the people on here, but as I get more chapters, there'll be more people.))
Chapter 1
“Hello.” Liesl Dawkins answered the phone, shooing her little sister out of the way.
“Liesl? Hey, this is Andromeda. Is Lan there?” The steady voice of Andromeda Black came through the phone. Liesl put her hand over her end of the phone and craned her neck to look into the living room. Not seeing Lan there, she resorted to drastic measure.
“LAN!!!! PHONE!” She yelled. She immediately regretted having done so when her mother and Lan appeared in the doorway, both with scowls on their faces. “Um... Andromeda's on the phone.” She mumbled, handing the phone to her brother and giving her mother an apologetic look.
As Lan took the phone, Liesl walked back to the living room and sat down on the lounge chair. She picked up her history book and began reading, but was interrupted by the door bell. She heard someone open the door, and then Laurel's voice calling, “Liesl, Michelle's here.”
Jumping up from the chair, Liesl ran into the entrance way and hugged her best friend. “Oh my gosh. You know the Beach Boys are going to be on today, right?” She asked excitedly, grinning at the dark haired Michelle.
Quietly smiling, Michelle nodded and then gave Liesl a surprised look. “How would I not know that? I've been waiting for today all week.” She said, laughing a bit. The Beach Boys were Michelle's favorite band and she always got extremely excited when anything having to do with the band was happening.
Right as Liesl was about to answer, Lan walked in and sat down on the couch, picking up the book he was reading for English class. “Dylan concert next week, so I'm getting tickets tomorrow. Want to go?” He asked, glancing up at Liesl and Michelle. Liesl was always thankful that her brother included her in almost everything he did, unlike some brothers.
“Definitely. Dylan sounds fun.” Liesl said brightly, nodding her head as she took her seat. Michelle shook her head as she seated herself on the couch, a slightly disgusted look on her face.
“No thanks. I can't stand Dylan.” She stated, straightening out her pink dress as she talked. Lan just shrugged and leaned back a bit, and, from the smirk on his face, Liesl could tell he had something amusing on his mind.
Giving Liesl a wink, Lan cleared his throat. “Amos Diggory's going to be there.” He said in a nonchalant voice. Michelle's head jerked up from examining her nails and she stared at Lan. Liesl repressed a laugh at the look on the girl's face. She was so in love with that guy. Before anyone could say anything, however, Laurel and Lucy ran in and turned the TV on.
“Bandstand's on!” Lucy yelped, clapping her hands and dancing around as American Bandstand theme song started to play. This fact drove all other thoughts from the girls' minds and all eyes were glued to the TV. Lan went back to reading his book, shaking his head over the excitement one show could cause.
Poking her head around the door, the Dawkins mother signaled to Lan. When Lan entered the kitchen, Meg gave him letter. “It's from the army. They're wanting you to join up.” She told him before turning back to her cooking.
Shaking his head, Lan sat down at the kitchen table and scanned the letter. “Well... I'm not joining up. You know that, right?” He said, rubbing his forehead in frustration. Just because his father was in the army didn't mean he would go running to sign up. Meg just nodded and kept stirring the cake mix.
“I know... I wouldn't want you to. Not right now at least.” Meg said, giving her son an understanding look. “Though it would force you to get a haircut.” She added slyly, smirking at Lan. Lan laughed a bit and ruffled his shaggy brown hair. “Mom. I like it long.” He told her, flicking the letter to the other side of the table, forgetting about it for the moment.
Meg just laughed and poured the mix into a baking pan. “I know you like it. But Mrs. Powell keeps after me about how young gentlemen should wear their hair like men.. not women.” She said, rolling her eyes at the thought of Lan's nosy math teacher. Lan rolled his eyes too and shook his head. “That lady gives me and Matt so much grief about our hair, it makes me want to just... I don't know. It's our hair, and we choose to wear it long. I don't see what's so hard to understand.” He stated.
Walking into the kitchen, Liesl caught the end of the conversation and grinned. “Mrs. Powell? Ha. To her, your hair... is her hair, if you're in school. Or anywhere.. she's just a busybody.” She stated, grabbing two Cokes out of the refrigerator. “You know she cut my hem out the other day? Said my skirt was too short.” Liesl slammed the door indignantly.
Winking at Lan, Meg grabbed two cups and handed them to Liesl. “Yes dear, we know. The skirt was below your knee and it was unfair. I agree, and I talked to her about that. She's very sorry, and your show's about to come back on.” She said, giving the blond head kiss before pointing toward the TV.
“Oh! Coming Chelle!” Liesl said, grinning at her mother and running back to the living room with the drinks. The sounds of the Beach Boys, along with the voices of the four girls, reached Meg and Lan's ears. Meg smiled and stuck the cake in the oven, and Lan shook his head, trying to ignore the letter on the other end of the table.
Chapter 2
“All I'm saying, Lan, is that there was a parking space way closer than this that you could have taken.”
“All I'm saying, Liesl, is that the stupid other car was crooked and I couldn't. It won't hurt you to walk a bit.”
“But it's freezing outside!”
“Tough!”
“Argh!” Liesl grabbed her book bag and slammed the car door. Clutching the top of her blue coat, the blond began walking toward the school building, mumbling under her breath as she walked. Lan put the keys in his pocket and got out of the car as well, but in a less agitated way. He grabbed his backpack and turned to face the school building. As he did so, he saw Liesl run to catch up with Lisette Vargas. Heaving a sigh, Lan swung his backpack onto his back and turned around as he heard his name called.
“Lan. You get tickets?” A dark haired boy asked, hands stuffed in his pockets and hair long and shaggy, like Lan's.
“Hey, Matt. Yeah, and I got one for Liesl and her friend Michelle too.” Lan told the other boy, nodding to himself. By this time, Liesl was standing in a group of girls, chatting away aimlessly. “Cold, Liesl?” He called cheekily, smirking at his sister. Liesl just stuck her tongue out and waved at Matt.
Waving back, Matt just grinned and shook his head. “Tell you what. Today, if Mrs. Powell gets after us about our hair, let's just leave early and go to study hall.” He suggested, giving a group of freshman girls a weird look as they giggled at Lan and him.
Lan laughed a bit opened the door. “Sounds like a plan.” He said, before running into someone. “Oh, sorry.... Mrs. Powell.” His voice trailed off as he looked at the scowling face of the dreaded teacher. Behind him, he sensed that Matt was slowly taking steps back, but he wasn't quick enough for Mrs. Powell.
“Not so fast, Mr. Brookes.” Powell bellowed, reaching out and grabbing Matt's shoulder. Wincing a bit, Matt allowed himself to be dragged to stand next to Lan, both with annoyed looks on their faces. “I suppose it's safe to assume that both of you have forgotten the meaning of 'haircuts' haven't you?--- Don't talk to me when I'm asking you a question!” Matt snapped his mouth back shut and adopted a confused look. “Obviously you have. I also assume that you and Mr. Dawkins have deemed it within your bounds to bring radios to school too?” She asked, reaching in both the boy's backpacks and producing portable radios. “Mr. Brookes. Will you stop that!” She bellowed again, and Matt's mouth snapped shut once again.
Lan cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes at Mrs. Powell. “Our hair is our business, Mrs. Powell. Keep the radios.” He stated and, grabbing Matt's arm, walked away. He had had enough of teachers like Mrs. Powell, thinking they could tell him how to dress, live, and wear his hair. It was none of their business, why did they think it was?
Looking over his shoulder, Matt just shook his head stopped at his locker, then began to unload his books. “d**n. Mrs. P's edgy. Must be a full moon tonight.” He said. Lan's face broke into a grin and he shook his head. Leave it to Matt to keep his sense of humor in annoying situations.
“The P's edgy? d**n... the day I didn't get my homework done, too.” The boys turned around and saw London leaning against the lockers. The dark haired girl tugged at her skirt, unconsciously displaying her dislike for the article of clothing. London had worn pants to school once, but had received six weeks detention for it, and had decided the pants weren't worth the trouble.
Before Matt or Lan could answer, Andromeda came up behind London and grinned at everyone. “Dylan next week!” She exclaimed and Matt clapped his hands once and let out a 'Yay-ya!”, making the group of freshman girls giggle once again, and sending the other three into a fit of laughter.
--
“Listen up, class. As you all know, two weeks from now is Valentine's day, meaning the school will be having our annual dance.”
As Mrs. Powell made this announcement, all the girls squealed, some boys grinned, Liesl, Matt, and London shrugged, and Lan and Andromeda groaned. To the later two, the dance meant another social function they wouldn't be attending, but would have to hear all about it for weeks to come. However, to all others it meant a good time.
“Oh my gosh. I can't wait!” Lexy whispered to Liesl and the two blonds clapped their hands. As Liesl turned back around in her seat, she saw Michelle looking over at Amos Diggory, a look of longing in her eyes.
“Don't worry, Chelle. He's bound to ask you.” She whispered to her best friend, smiling warmly at the other girl.
Lan watched as Liesl, Lexy, Michelle, and Lisette all leaned in and started talking about what they were going to wear. Why was that always such a big deal to girls? And shopping together? Maneuvering past groups of girls just made his day when he had to go and run errands. Though if he could take Lisette it would all be different, but she was dating Daniel Wickes, so fat chance. The brown haired boy was shaken out of his thoughts by Matt.
“Hey, man. I'm going to take London to that, so you and Andromeda have to go and help keep us company. How can we make fun of things without you?” Matt stated, turning around in his seat to face Lan. London nodded her agreement.
“Yeah. We need you and Meda there. Please, Meda?” London stuck her bottom lip out and looked between Lan and Andromeda. Letting out identical sighs, the unsocial pair just nodded their heads.
Mrs. Powell rapped on her desk, and the whole class turned around to face her. “The school expects the young ladies to dress like ladies, and the young men to dress like gentlemen. That also includes hair, Mr. Brookes and Mr. Dawkins.” She slowly turned her head to face Matt and Lan. The way she looked at them reminded Liesl of a vulture about to descend on its prey.
Slamming his hands down on the desk, Lan stood up from his desk, as did Matt. Slowly, the boys started walking toward the door, stopping only when Mrs. Powell called their names. “Where do you think you're going?” She asked incredulously.

Blinking, Mrs. Powell looked at the class and then at the boys. “How do you plan to do that?” She asked, crossing her arms.
Lan gave a 'duh' look and just shrugged. “Well ya see. You kinda go out the door and keep walking left until you reach the library.” He stated, ignoring the stifled laughs of the class.
Matt nodded and opened the door. “The hardest part of the journey is opening the doors, but we'll manage.” He added, winking at Mrs. Powell before closing the door behind he and Lan, leaving the despised teacher with her mouth hanging open.
